Key Highlights of Justice Atul Sreedharan’s Transfer

  • Official Notification Issued: The Central Government notified the transfer of Justice Atul Sreedharan from the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh back to the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  • Legal Basis: The transfer has been executed under Article 222(1) of the Constitution of India, following consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
  • Ministry of Law & Justice : The formal notification was issued on March 13, 2025, directing him to assume charge in Madhya Pradesh.

Background of the Transfer

  • Supreme Court Collegium’s Recommendation: The transfer was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium in a meeting held on March 6, 2025.
  • Previous Transfer in 2023: Justice Sreedharan was transferred to the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on March 28, 2023, following his request for relocation due to personal reasons.
  • Reason for 2023 Transfer: He sought a transfer as his elder daughter was beginning her legal practice in Indore, and he wanted to avoid any conflict of interest.

Justice Sreedharan’s Legal Career

  • Born on May 24, 1966, he started his legal career in 1992 after completing his law degree.
  • Trained under Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium before practicing independently in Delhi and Indore.
  • Appointed as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on April 7, 2016.
  • Gained expertise in criminal, civil, and service matters, representing both government and private entities.
  • Served at the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court for nearly two years, delivering several key judgments.
