CALCUTTA | 10TH JULY 2025 – The rape survivor in the South Kolkata Law College case informed the Calcutta High Court on Thursday that she is satisfied with the investigation conducted so far by the Kolkata Police.
A lawyer representing the survivor made this statement before a Bench comprising Justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De.
“Victim’s Advocate-on-Record (AOR) has said that the victim is satisfied with the progress of the investigation so far,” the Court recorded in its order.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
The case involves a first-year student of South Kolkata Law College who was allegedly raped on June 25 in the security guard room of the college.
A medical examination conducted at a state-run hospital has corroborated the survivor’s statement.
ARRESTS AND ALLEGATIONS
So far, four accused have been arrested by the Kolkata Police: Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed, and the college security guard.
It is alleged that Mishra raped the student, while the other two accused shot videos to blackmail her.
Notably, Mishra is stated to be associated with the youth wing of the Trinamool Congress.
COURT PROCEEDINGS
The Calcutta High Court was hearing public interest litigation (PIL) petitions seeking an independent and court-monitored investigation into the matter.
During the hearing, the Bench examined the case diary and a sealed cover report submitted by the police detailing the investigation’s progress.
The Court directed that a scanned copy of this progress report be shared with the victim’s counsel.
“A scanned copy of this report to be prepared by the department in the presence of the officer of this court shall be handed over to the AOR for the victim, in the presence of the AOR of the state,” the Court ordered.
The Court also cautioned the victim’s counsel to maintain confidentiality regarding the contents of the report:
“The contents of the report must not be divulged to anyone.”
Additionally, the police have been directed to furnish another progress report within four weeks.
PIL DISMISSED OVER BONA FIDES CONCERNS
The Bench also dismissed a PIL filed by one Vijay Kumar Singhal, questioning the genuineness of the petition.
Although the PIL originally sought a CBI probe, the petitioner’s counsel began to focus on the alleged violation of human rights of the accused during the hearing.
“We are apprehensive about the bona fide of the petitioner that while there is an accusation of partial investigation, the petitioner is now espousing the cause of the accused being ill-treated or their human rights being violated. We have a serious doubt about their bona fide and the same is dismissed,” the Court ordered.
