CHAIBASA, JHARKHAND — AUGUST 7, 2025– A Special MP/MLA court in Jharkhand has granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case filed against him over remarks made about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a Congress convention in 2018.
BAIL GRANTED AFTER PERSONAL APPEARANCE
The bail was granted by Judge Supriya Rani Tigga after Rahul Gandhi appeared in person before the court in compliance with earlier directives.
“Special MP/MLA court Judge Supriya Rani Tigga granted bail to Gandhi in the matter after he personally appeared.”
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
The case stems from a complaint filed by Pratap Katiyar, a resident of Chaibasa, who alleged that Gandhi made derogatory remarks about Amit Shah, accusing him of being involved in murder during a public event in 2018.
“The case arose from a complaint was filed by one Pratap Katiyar, a resident of Chaibasa, alleging that Gandhi made derogatory remarks Shah during a Congress convention in 2018. Gandhi in his statements had allegedly accused Shah of being involved in murder.”
LEGAL TIMELINE
February 2025: The Jharkhand High Court rejected Rahul Gandhi’s petition seeking to quash the defamation case.
“In February this year, the Jharkhand High Court rejected Gandhi’s petition to quash the criminal defamation case.”
February 27, 2025: A non-bailable warrant was issued by the Chaibasa court after Gandhi failed to appear for trial.
“On February 27, the Chaibasa court issued a non-bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi for failing to appear and participate in the trial.”
Gandhi challenged the warrant before the Jharkhand High Court, which granted a stay on the order.
“Gandhi challenged this order before the Jharkhand High Court which subsequently stayed the warrant.”
Despite the stay, a second non-bailable warrant was issued, requiring Gandhi to appear in court on June 26.
“Thereafter, a second non-bailable warrant was issued by the Chaibasa court against Gandhi and he was directed to appear on June 26.”
Gandhi again moved the High Court to challenge this second warrant.
“Gandhi then again moved High Court, challenging the same.”
The High Court directed Gandhi to appear before the trial court, which led to his personal appearance today.
